Differential Diagnosis of Autism in School-age Children

Differential Diagnosis of Autism in School-Age Children

Date: February 13, 2025

Didactics prepared by: Nicole Kesner – PhD, PhD student in autism and neuropsychology at Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon, USA.

We successfully held an ECHO session dedicated to the topic of diagnosis and intervention for ASD in schoolchildren. Parents often face confusion when they do not understand what exactly in their child’s development does not meet typical norms. Often, specialists give contradictory diagnoses: some talk about autism, others about the “spectrum”, organic lesions of the CNS, MMD or ZPMR. That is why we focused on the importance of correct differentiation of ASD (autism spectrum disorders) in school-age children, especially given the secondary consequences that may arise due to the lack or ineffectiveness of early intervention.

📌 During the meeting, we examined in detail the case of a 10-year-old boy with behavioral difficulties and signs of ASD. Together with psychologist @Lina Timok (Chernivtsi), we discussed:

✔️ How to correctly recognize ASD in a schoolchild
✔️ What interventions have proven effectiveness
✔️ How to build interdisciplinary interaction between specialists to better support the child and his family

Thank you to all participants for your active participation and in-depth professional discussion! Ahead are new topics, cases and meetings that will help us become even better in supporting children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
